Frequently Asked Questions

ABA works well because the therapy is catered specifically to your child’s needs. It focuses on building skills and increasing positive behaviors, changing existing behaviors, and eliminating inappropriate behaviors. Research has shown that ABA is more effective with early intervention, but there are no age limits. The greatest benefit of applied behavior analysis is the practical knowledge and skills caregivers gain to address challenges and promote positive responses.

New Foundations specializes in early intervention. We see clients 12 and under, though we do work with clients older than that. We do not take new clients older than age 8.

Our clients include those with:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD/ADHD)
  • Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD)
  • Communication and social delays
  • Emotional/behavioral concerns
  • Problematic behavior (aggression, tantrums) in home, school, and the community

A BCBA conducts and provides interpretation of your child’s behavioral assessment. The BCBA designs, implements and supervises the behavior analytic interventions.

The BCBA will work with parents, caregivers and teachers to understand and practice therapy approaches such as modeling and assistance with the learning of new behaviors to ensure that the behavioral intervention is being implemented appropriately ensuring treatment success.

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a trained behavior analyst who holds a masters degree in behavior therapy and has passed necessary exams and requirements from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.

The BACB also has a search tool you can use to verify that BCBA’s are up to date and certified to practice as a BCBA – you can find the link here.

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional who practices under the close, ongoing supervision of a BCBA. The RBT is primarily responsible for the direct implementation of behavior-analytic services. RBT’s do not design interventions or assessment plans.

To become an RBT, staff must sit for the exam administered by the BACB, while they are working towards this certification staff will be a BT, behavior technician.

Our team provides direct 1:1 therapy in your home. In some cases, we may also go to where services are needed such as your child’s school or out in the community. Should it be determined that we need to implement ABA in the school, it should be noted that many schools have policies against outside practitioners and may only consent to observations, but not facilitation. To ensure that we are able to help in your child’s school, please speak with your child’s teachers and administrators to obtain approval.

Our Early Intervention program focuses largely on your child’s language acquisition, social skills, and all prerequisite skills they would need to be successful in a mainstream kindergarten classroom. Mainstream school is often our goal for our little ones, and we will do everything we can to get your child ready.

For therapy to be a success, it is important that the BCBAs train parents with ABA techniques so that treatment your child is receiving is consistent. Family members may be asked to work on play skills outside of therapy to increase the target behaviors. You, the parent(s), are part of our team!
